ARC500 British Survey Course

Spring 2024

Instructor: Shumi Bose
This survey course examined the city of London through the lens of a single urban element. My research focused on graffiti and street art, exploring how informal markings, murals, and acts of inscription shape the city's visual identity. Through site observations, historical research, and spatial analysis, the project investigated graffiti as both a form of cultural expression and a reflection of social, political, and economic conditions. The study revealed how London's vibrant graffiti culture transforms ordinary urban surfaces into spaces of communication, resistance, and collective memory.
